This tool extracts site specific precipitation data from the
GridMET dataset
(nearest 4-km grid node)
and plots cumulative precipitation for a chosen year with
median cumulative precipitation for a chosen period of years
(top figure). It also plots lagged average precipitation rates
for those periods (bottom figure).
To use this app, select a location (click on map or enter values for
latitude and longitude), period of years, comparison year, and
the lag period then click the "Get plot" button.
Please be patient
while the request is processed, a lot of data is being accessed
and processed. Two figures appear below when the request is done.
The data plotted on the "previous 14-d mean precipitation rate"
graph (bottom figure, 14-d lag selected) are average precipitation
rates from the respective cumulative precipitation curves for the
previous 14-day period (i.e., the lagged average value is plotted at the
end of the lag period).
New values submitted for lag and comparison year are generally
plotted more quickly than initial requests.
Requests for a new location, start, or end year will take
a similar amount of time to complete as the initial request.
To create a bookmark for a preselected location, edit the bookmark URL
to include a location query string.
Query strings, are appended to the URL and have the format:
?lat=D.D&lon=D.D
where D.D are the latitude and longitude for the site (i.e., just as
values appear in the input boxes).

A description of the dataset used in this app is found in
Abatzoglou (2013)
. This dataset is updated daily to include the most current records
(typically a few days in the past).
